Niko is a Canadian treasure and if you haven't read her book, The Dad Rock That Made Me a Woman, I suggest you remedy that. posted by Kitteh at 7:59 AM on September 26 [4 favorites]
That was heartbreaking and beautiful.
I don't think I've ever had any of those experiences - Arby's drive-thru, Beastie Boys album, struggling to type something terrifyingly private and true on a flipphone - but every vividly painted image felt like part of my life even so.
I don't know Stratis's other work, but I'm going to have to seek it out; I hope she's happier these days. (Aha - more of her work, and her bio says "She lives in Toronto with her fianc¨¦, their dog Bowie and two cats Winona and Ramona.", which definitely sounds happier. Good.) (And it appears that her newsletter, Anxiety Shark, is on Ghost, not Substack, for those keeping track.)
I can't even find the words for my grief at all the dead TV characters showing her a poisoned future. If I had a million dollars, I would commission a bunch of happy ending books and TV shows from trans folks about trans folks so we could all have more happy endings surrounding us and filling us with hope.
I am so grateful to have had my heart broken by this this morning. Thank you so much for posting this, Uncle, and for introducing me to Niko. posted by kristi at 8:14 AM on September 26 [4 favorites]
Agreed with Kitteh - I just read her book this (wrote about it here), and I wish I'd read it the day it came out.
Thanks for posting those excerpts, Kitteh posted by Didymus at 8:39 AM on September 26 [1 favorite]

¡°Why?¡± asked Larry, in his practical way. "Sergeant," admonished the Lieutenant, "you mustn't use such language to your men." "Yes," accorded Shorty; "we'll git some rations from camp by this evenin'. Cap will look out for that. Meanwhile, I'll take out two or three o' the boys on a scout into the country, to see if we can't pick up something to eat." Marvor, however, didn't seem satisfied. "The masters always speak truth," he said. "Is this what you tell me?" MRS. B.: Why are they let, then? My song is short. I am near the dead. So Albert's letter remained unanswered¡ªCaro felt that Reuben was unjust. She had grown very critical of him lately, and a smarting dislike coloured her [Pg 337]judgments. After all, it was he who had driven everybody to whatever it was that had disgraced him. He was to blame for Robert's theft, for Albert's treachery, for Richard's base dependence on the Bardons, for George's death, for Benjamin's disappearance, for Tilly's marriage, for Rose's elopement¡ªit was a heavy load, but Caro put the whole of it on Reuben's shoulders, and added, moreover, the tragedy of her own warped life. He was a tyrant, who sucked his children's blood, and cursed them when they succeeded in breaking free. "Tell my lord," said Calverley, "I will attend him instantly." HoME²Ô¾®¿Õ·¬ºÅѸÀ×Á´½Ó
