Compagnie La Machine is a French street theater company based in Nantes (
previously,
previouslier, also
previouslier) famous for building and operating large-scale mechanical creatures. In their North American debut, they brought a 45-ton mythical dragon-horse and a 40 ton giant spider to battle in the streets of Ottawa as part of Canada's sesquicentennial celebrations. It was, to put it mildly, a roaring success.
The four-day spectacle, entitled The Spirit of the Dragon-Horse, With Stolen Wings, took place in multiple locations throughout downtown Ottawa, with the exact routes and settings for some of the various set-pieces kept secret, to allow spectators to happen upon them, or have to put forth some effort to find and pursue them. Having enormous creatures wandering around busy city streets that have not been shut down to pedestrians prior to their appearance is accomplished by a team of volunteers, some caution tape, and "the potato."
The creatures are often accompanied by live music provided by musicians hoisted far up over the crowd in cherry-pickers.
"The story, the music, the performance and of course, the creatures themselves, come together in a poetic harmony that challenges our perception of what is real and imaginary."
