      FFFFFFFUUUUUUUUUUUU-

Social news site Reddit recently held their "Best of Reddit 2010" awards honoring key players in the site over the last year, including the progenitor of the Rally to Restore Sanity, the clever drive-by cartoonist Sure_Ill_Draw_That, unofficial image host Imgur, and feel-good story of the year "Today you, tomorrow me." But perhaps most interesting was the winner for Best Big Community: FFFFFFFUUUUUUUUUUUU! Originally inspired by 4chan's popular Rage Guy meme, F7U12 (for short) is a clearinghouse for user-made web comics, slice-of-life affairs that tell a story or share a common frustration using a small collection of crudely drawn yet highly evocative facial expressions. Several have become small memes in their own right -- the wily Trolldad, the doormat Okay, the prideful Fuck Yea, the melodramatic Gasp. And one comic, inspired by the warped text randomly generated by reCAPTCHAs (previously), has given us Lord Inglip -- god of a dark religion now rivaling FSM whose cryptic commands marshal loyal armies of gropagas, falcows, Sellicks, and... canary into exploits both monstrous and inconvenient (timeline, wiki). Obey him -- or else! More fun with F7U12: rage face origins, rage faces in real life, Twitter feed, search comics, create your own (alternate).

"Rage Face" - directed at any one who propagates Rage Faces. I really can't stand these. First of all I wonder if any thing that causes some one to use a Rage Face actually makes them that angry. Secondly, it makes me think that there is some segment of the population that is constantly fuming about minutia and other peoples opinions. Finally, I wonder whether or not any of my friends or peers, IRL, are secretly constantly angry but I soon realize that none of my IRL acquaintances visit web sites like 4chan. Is this hyperbole or are there simply a lot of people with severe emotional improprieties?

God knows I never complain to my friends or family about the little things that have bugged me all day long, nor have I ever told an anecdotal account to hone in a point, nor have I ever engaged in any exaggeration in the attempt at self-deprecation, nor have I ever, ever, been sarcastic and mocking but lovingly so, like a bearded man's hugs.

I... have a mildly embarrassing and somewhat alarming confession to make. I have become a bit of a swinger when it comes to MeFi vs. Reddit. Some days I want all the glorious intellectual masturbation and foreplay that a MeFi discussion brings to bear on any subject, and some days goddammit, I just want a RageGuy quickie and go on about my day.

I blame cohabitation. My darling soon-to-be husband is a dyed-in-the-wool Reddit man. I have introduced him to the glory that is MetaFilter, and he now has it bookmarked and has introduced it to his feeds, and we now frequently find ourselves thoughfully discussing intellectual articles and nifty things we find here... however...

I... can hardly bring myself to say this but I've now got Reddit bookmarked and it's on my RSS feeds too.

Ah reddit. It has a lot going for it (the sheer volume of information, and it's pretty good for lols). The only thing I think it really lacks is a feeling of community, since it's just so huge and full of trolls and throwaway accounts. I'm the biggest fan of their "delete account" feature where the comments stay but no longer link back to a name. Great feature for protecting anonymity.

Anyway, more importantly, can I say that "NonsensicalAnalogy" was ROBBED? Or even CommentStatistics. I mean SIDT is cool, but he showed up at the very end of the year. The other two have DEDICATION, man.

I don't really understand the elitism against it

The elitism that springs out of reddits springs not from the loins of the virginal, but from those dirty old buggers who have been on reddit for years and years and years, who saw it in its early stages pre-subreddit, pre-Ron Paul, pre-first wavers from the Digg HD-DVD scandal, who see it going downhill, even today, as more and more and more people join and the interests, and the hobbyists, and those impossibly informed opinions give way to inane jokes until such a point that even the puns are lost and diluted in the ordinary effluvia of daily life.

It's the elitism of old fags and whether or not the objective experience has gone downhill or not, there's no doubt that the site and the community has changed, has become more social in nature, and whether or not this will end up being a good thing or a bad thing, and whether or not reddit is just the new Digg or Stumbleupon or whatever, if the community can find a lasting kind of identity remains to be seen.

As someone who frequents reddit, I would say... the misogyny, racism, and generally poor quality of a lot of the comments. Especially the misogyny. Also, the egotism of the community gets a little grating after a while (*ahem*, especially considering that MeFi is clearly vastly superior...).

Don't get me wrong, Reddit has a lot going for it, and it's hardly the worst place on the web for these things, but I understand some of the criticisms leveled at it.

@defenestration: /r/TrueReddit is attempting to take Reddit back to the old days of quality posts.

The beautiful thing about Reddit's design is that when /r/TrueReddit starts getting filled with the misogynists and racists and shit posters, a new subreddit can be made and everybody can migrate.

Other good subreddits: /r/learnprogramming, /r/depthhub, and one that Mefites might really like: /r/agora, which is attempting to maintain super-high quality dialectic dialog. It's refreshing, but it's *hard* compared to the posting done on most message boards, and that keeps out idiots pretty well.

I love the heck out of Mefi, but I run out of content here way before I'm ready to be done surfing for the day. I head to Reddit and can gorge on fresh content without end. Mefi is like a high end restaurant, and Reddit is like a mile long buffet where you can occasionally find filet mignon.

      defenestration:

A key issue with reddit is that subreddits with wider scope have generally worse quality of discussion. To know what subreddits you should be subscribing to requires knowing more about you; there just aren't many subreddits that everyone should be subscribing to because then, everyone does, and it goes to shit.

When you get a reddit login, you will start out subscribed to a number of (shitty) subreddits of fairly wide scope. I don't know what the current set of those is, but generally, you can go to a subreddit's page and look at the right column to find related subreddits. Find the related reddits that correspond to the more specific facets of what you're interested in. For example, r/science sucks. But if you go to the r/science page, you will find on the far right of the page a list of better subreddits that correspond to specific sciences, one or two of which might be more interesting to you.

If you would rather not go through the process of replacing your general subreddits with specific ones, try unsubscribing from everything and just starting with r/TrueReddit, r/DepthHub, and r/newreddits.

Try it the other way around -- what are your interests? Find the subreddits for those interests and see if there's an interesting community there.

If not, either move on or see if you can build one yourself.

Do I get a prize for leaving Digg and joining Reddit not for the HD-DVD codes or the Digg Redesign about 8 months ago?

Digg was boring for me because it lacked the content. It was getting stale and losing users. I think other people agreed, hence the last-ditch effort to "save" Digg by rebooting the site.

When I went to reddit, I saw clever, funny things on the front page, and a variety of communities that focused on what was interesting and new. (A lot of the stuff was inherited from 4chan, but that's fine. Some of 4chan's content is interesting, creative stuff, but a lot of it is derivative or distasteful junk. I'm not dissing 4chan's quality, because it does churn out gold sometimes, but the signal to noise ratio is awful.)

Plus, the subreddit system is great and creates a space for people to discuss news and links on any topic.

I think Reddit is more robust than Digg was, but I think it could fade. For one, Reddit is slow and unreliable (ever try to pull up more than 1-3 new messages? It takes a good 30 seconds, and some browsers/devices just assume the site's down before they get a response), infrastructure-wise, and it's pretty likely someone could design a new social news network that copies the subreddit system but has it run faster (either by throwing more servers at the issue or getting better caching) and look better. It's kind of a better-mousetrap thing.

However, it's pretty easy to work around just about everything but the slow messaging system. The Reddit Enhancement Suite extension (for both Firefox and Chrome) adds a bunch of new features (including a mefi-style new comments count, support for multiple accounts, in-page image link loading, etc), and also does some general prettification of the site and makes threaded comments more readable.

I think the issue is that each successive generation for this kind of network is harder to beat as they get closer to the ideal. As far as I heard, Slashdot was basically a repository of links to news (mostly technology) with comments, and had little in the way of Web 2.0 technology, because it simply hadn't caught on yet (I know they just recently had a reboot that implements some of those things). Digg added aesthetics, somewhat better voting and story submission, and AJAX usability, which were new at the time and definitely made for a more fun to use site. Reddit offered a less confusing voting algorithm (nobody really understood how stuff got on the Digg frontpage, aside from maybe MrBabyMan and other powerusers) and the subreddit system, (and also had the benefit of still functioning when Digg kind of fell apart trying to stem a loss of users). Reddit also has serious brand loyalty and a sense of community, which will make people have trouble leaving the site even if it does start to go downhill.

tl;dr: If anything kills Reddit, it'll be the lack of server infrastructure (although I don't think Conde Naste will let that get completely terrible, as Reddit is pretty much their modern web presence. Without Reddit, they'd just have Wired, which is more or less a static blog network as far as the internet is concerned) or an HTML 5 wizard who can make a similar site that runs and looks better.

There's also AskReddit (like AskMe, but with a lot more chatfilter)

AskReddit is specifically for chatfilter. "AskReddit is for thought-provoking, inspired questions."

If you want questions with factual answers, r/answers is the place to go. Or you can directly ask the people that will know the answer (e.g. "I've got a question about how to modify firefox's behavior, so I'll make self post to r/firefox"; different subreddits have different levels of tolerance/interest in questions).

If you like interesting or funny videos, /r/videos is decent to subscribe to. I'm not really into the "medium" reddits that much, although I like their most upvoted content to end up on my front page.

AskReddit is kind of like MetaFilter's hypothetical chatfilter section. Basically, you're best off asking an abstract, subjective question, like say "What's the meanest thing a family member ever said to you?" There's also a lot of people who post stories and then tack on "What should I do now?" at the end, which I think the community wasn't made for, but which get a lot of upvotes/responses. In short, it's kind of more a self-post zoo than a place to go for specific answers.

If you want something more analogous to AskMetafilter, you want /r/Answers. It's more closely vetted. Bad questions (IE "Am I the only person who thinks x?") get downvoted or deleted, while answers to specific questions tend to get legitimate answers. I like to go there when I'm between AskMe questions. Check out its sister communities like /r/AskScience for questions specific to a certain field.

/r/Suicide_Watch is a great community, that effectively acts as a suicide hotline for redditors. I strongly recommend it if you want to help people or feel hopeless.

/r/Sex is exactly what it sounds like. Crowdsourced sex advice, complete with links to other pro-sex reddits.

Other than that, the subreddit search is a great thing. Usually, the subreddits with the most users are the most useful and well moderated (Example: /r/Marijuana is actually smaller and generally regarded as lesser than /r/Trees, despite having the more appropriate name, it's a story that involves some mod drama I won't describe here). But even an underpopulated, rarely updated reddit usually has picked up a few gems over time.

Also, when finding a subreddit, it's usually a good idea to click "Top," and then choose "All Time" in order to get an idea of what the reddit likes.

Yeah, see, here's the thing. You may not have realized this because it looks like you're fairly new here, but we try for the most part not to do ironic homophobia (or ironic racism or ironic misogyny) here. You know why? Because there's two components to ironic homophobia. Once of them is, yes, irony. Yeah. We get it. The other component, though, is homophobia, and we'd prefer to avoid that because we're not (for the most part) bigots or frightened thirteen-year-olds.

But you really need to create an account (you don't even need to give an email address) and select the subreddits you want to read instead of the fire hose you get when you go to the site when you're not logged in.

I also like how you can downvote true crap and so many people will never see it. And the "hide" feature is nice for when there are posts that you may not like, but are within the rules, to keep you from seeing them.

For those of you requesting examples of Reddit's sexism, look at this comment, posted just today, with nearly 100 upvotes:

"women arguing outside the bounds of logic is probably the hardest part of being in a relationship. If they are upset, never try to use logic to make them feel better. You will only make them feel stupid, which makes them even more upset..."

Or this one, with 60 upvotes:

This is why women spend their teen years being such absolute bitches to each other. They can maintain a sustained barrage of cool anger and and total calm, even if they suck at logic they can always find new corners to twist you around. And they never, no mater what, admit they were wrong or apologize. That's social suicide among girls. Meanwhile men while boys resolve all differences in 30 seconds or less. Punch punch punch. "What were we fighting about? hey! cookies!" Men are simply not prepared to be adversarial with women.

There are far more egregious examples of highly upvoted sexist/racist comments on Reddit, but these are recent, so I have them ready to hand. The sexism on Reddit is real, pervasive, and extreme. It's really unfortunate, since cool stuff does pop up there, but it makes the site really aggravating to read or participate in.

      I don't really like Reddit.

I do go there, when I'm caught up on the big blue, But beyond the incessant duplicate posts, what drove me crazy was the memes (as mentioned in the FPP). F6U12 is a sort of dumb emotional shorthand that I didn't need. It made sense on 4Chan, but what draws one to Reddit are the comments, not these little baby-talk cartoons that the grown adults there make. And they get upvoted and appear on the r/all lists and you'll have to wade through an unholy lot of these spoiled little children jokes to get to anything interesting. Even ignoring them takes mental energy.

Then about a week ago I discovered the Reddit Enhancement Suite, and specifically the filteReddit module. Now I'm able to weed out the subreddits I don't like (about 15 of them) and so I see maybe 20-30 posts out of 100. But then I see more of the obscure stories I would have missed. There's much more in the enhancement suite than just this one module, and it takes a few clicks to filter out a subreddit, but it's been worth it.

People read the comments on Reddit?

Maybe I'm doing it wrong, but I just use it as a link roll for those slow afternoons.

About 50% of the time I don't bother reading the linked article, I just read the comments (not even counting the ones I can't read at work because they're blocked).

and it's pretty likely someone could design a new social news network that copies the subreddit system but has it run faster

Go for it, most of reddit is open source (anti-spam algorithms are not I believe). I don't think most of the core reddit users (ie. the ones that make reddit worth visiting) would leave for a copycat site.

I'd get reddit gold, if I could get a solid private server. Or if I had proof the Gold Lounge is a good place where constructive discussion happens.

It's just like regular reddit except with monocles. I got gold because I wanted to donate some money to a site I'd enjoyed using for years rather than because I wanted or needed any of the features it grants.

I toyed with Reddit a couple of months ago when I was in a particularly funky funk and was staying indoors a lot. Ran up a thousand comment and article points by posting links to particularly reactionary political left wing news articles.

Then I came out of my funk and began questioning things (as usual) . Maybe Israel wasn't the cause of all the middle east problems. Maybe some transgendered people are unrealistic. Maybe not all Republicans are assholes. Maybe memes are overrated. The reaction to all this was not very welcoming. And I fell afoul of a particularly neckbearded mod when it came to things regarding Israel. So I deleted my user name , made another and just use it for occasional browsing.

My fling on Reddit both confirmed much of what I had already known about people on the Internet and taught me a few new things besides.

      1. Most people are bleeding idiots who jump on bandwagons. Most people couldn't think critically or outside their particular box if their life depended on it.

      2. The most prolific posters in a forum are usually the ones with the least to say.

      3. Unregulated mass modding (upvotes, downvotes) leads to high schoolish "mod-squads" up or down voting based on idiotic group think.

      4. That a five dollar barrier to entry eliminates about 90% of the idiots (and the 10 year olds) of the world right off the block and probably a one dollar fee would eliminate 85% of them alone.

      5. You can't fight crazy and you can't fight stupid. But you can and should do your best to give an incentive for both crazy and for stupid (cough cough five bucks) to go somewhere else.

      6. That free and open social media will always be doomed to mediocrity as the voices of the mediocre will always vastly outnumber the voices of the truly interesting with something important or fascinating to say.

I find the juxtaposition of "supremacists" in close conjunction with "Reddit" to be particularly funny. Reddit is anything but elitist. As I indicated earlier, it appears to me to be a vast stormy sea of mediocrity with huge waves beating uselessly on unseen shores. Or to be less glib , it's a dog and pony show for the drama crowd. You would have to invent a new system of mathematics to adequately measure the signal to noise ratio there. It's Eternal September all day, every day.

Obviously something that I said touched a sore spot within you so my apologies for any inner turmoil I seemed to have touched.

Well in other reddit news reddit has some new hires. They recently hit 1 billion page views a month so Conde Nast must be tossing them a bone. I like tho think every once in a while a Conde Nast exec looks at the site and and has a heart attack.

      >I like the rage comics, because they convey complex emotions and common experiences briefly.

That's why I don't like them. I don't really find their summation of complex emotion to be compelling, and the experiences are frequently too common for me to want to read them. And I don't mean "common" in a social class way, I mean in a "OMG, did someone just make another rage comic about holding in their farts?" sort of way.

It seems that Poet_Lariat and I have both got caught up in going against the hive-mind in the comments here.

Ad Hominem: I've always thought of Conde Nast's ownership of Reddit was more due to it being the ultimate source of magazine article fodder. But now I'm looking at their wikipedia page and I see I was thinking that they published a lot more magazine titles than I had thought. I knew they owned Wired, but didn't know they'd bought up the always excellent Ars Technica.

God, is it ever obnoxious when people are all "the hivemind is against me" this and "Metafilter likes hipsters" that. You're not Che Guevara and we aren't the Man. Get a grip.

I was also surprised to discover this week that AOL owns engadget . I had forgotten forgot about the Ars Technica takeover but remember now that I herd about it several months ago.

It's the way of Capitalism. See something good. Dilute it to make more profit. Rinse ... repeat. Sell the stock of what you now made worthless and move on to the next good thing that you see.

Remember when Snapple actually was all natural and made with good things?

The same with Internet buy outs now. Dilute it , inflate its worth, abandon it.

I like the ragecomics not only because I find some of them quite funny, but because it's really interesting to see how creative people can be over time given a few pre-established 'characters' and conventions. It's like modern-day noh theater or Commedia Dell'Art! Seriously.

I¡¯ve been here for 5 years and there for 3 years and I found Reddit via Metafilter. Reddit ranges from very good to so bad that I don¡¯t have words to tell you how bad it can get. There are subReddits that flirt with criminal insanity... and I suspect these harbour miscreants that none of us would want to move in next door to Garrison Keillor on even his worst day, after having learned that he¡¯s been doomed to Lutheran hell for anal raping Norman Rockwell.

So be it. Reddit started going to hell like a redneck on crack when Digg imploded, and droves of unappealing fools jumped ship like rats and moved to Reddit. Thus the fuuuuuuu bullshit. The funny thing is, and I have to grudgingly admit, it has actually produced a few gems in the last couple of days after a horrible beginning.

To my utter astonishment, my first comment on Reddit a month ago got 1031 votes.

I enjoy Reddit a lot, appreciate the exuberant and good links community there but feel very fortunate that my home is on the blue. The FFFFFFFFUUUUUUUUUUUU comics seem particularly ugly and yet there is something intriguing in their expressive simplicity.

Viva robust, eagerly communicative, very informative and energetic cyber communities!

Reddit is cool like 20% of the time, and the other 80% of the time is infuriating. The groupthink is absurd, and the overall immaturity grating. You'd think a relatively intelligent group of people would have some grasp of gender issues and understand that women aren't out to humiliate them or steal their money. The MensRight subreddit is the perfect example of them being shitty (along with the hijacking of r/LadyBashing).

The special-topic subreddits, though, are pretty awesome. WeAreTheMusicMakers is what got me on that site in the first place, and it's still a decent subreddit.

This post is awesome -- I've seen the Inglip meme pop up a few times on Tumblr and I always wondered where I could find more. I like them more than most memes because they follow that improv trick of saying "Yes, and" after each new CAPTCHA, which leads to good jokes but also some surprisingly effective world-building.

MeFi will always be my home, but I'm glad to be on board.

      >>Reddit is basically the WELL

No..... reddit is nothing like the Well was. The well was interesting, topical, genuinely entertaining and mostly enlightening. Reddit is like the Huffington Post run by 14 year old boys. No, Reddit is exactly like that.

Yes you can find some gems . No you can not go against the group-think if you actually chose to participate. And the group-think says girls are icky, Israel is always bad, Ganja is always good and heaven help you if you are a transexual and want to remove the all-revered dick from your life. And that's the very best of the group-think. It gets worse. Much worse.

Reddit is a game. Multiple accounts are easy to obtain. Don;t like someone? Make four accounts and down vote every single post of theirs all day long. Since you're a 14 year old (or have the mentality of one) you have all day to do that to as many people as you want .

Steve Jobs on Reddit? The Woz? You'd find people like that on the Well. You will rarely if ever find people like that on Reddit.

Reddit is mildly interesting if you use it to point you to trending topics. It is all but useless as a discussion forum for anyone without a huge amount of time to wade through the trash to find a bit of nourishment here or there.

Yes , Reddit is essentially Usenet. And as useless as Usenet and for the very same reasons.

¡°Why?¡± asked Larry, in his practical way. "Sergeant," admonished the Lieutenant, "you mustn't use such language to your men." "Yes," accorded Shorty; "we'll git some rations from camp by this evenin'. Cap will look out for that. Meanwhile, I'll take out two or three o' the boys on a scout into the country, to see if we can't pick up something to eat." Marvor, however, didn't seem satisfied. "The masters always speak truth," he said. "Is this what you tell me?" MRS. B.: Why are they let, then? My song is short. I am near the dead. After all, it was he who had driven everybody to whatever it was that had disgraced him. He was to blame for Robert's theft, for Albert's treachery, for Richard's base dependence on the Bardons, for George's death, for Benjamin's disappearance, for Tilly's marriage, for Rose's elopement¡ªit was a heavy load, but Caro put the whole of it on Reuben's shoulders, and added, moreover, the tragedy of her own warped life.
