To clarify: like we all aren't tired of all those skateboard bail clips on RealTV. My favorite Ahmad Rashad quote: "<a href="http://worldindustries.tv/tvindex.html">Do these guys</a> <a href="http://deadwood.koston.net/videos/">ever land</a> <a href="http://www.angelfire.com/ab5/haroskate/clips.html">standing up?"</a><br>
And how does the hilarious yet embarrassing search engine link tie in? It seems they've registered <a href="http://www.emericashoes.com">emericashoes.com</a>, although apparently have nothing to do with the <a href="http://www.emericaskate.com">actual skate shoe company</a> of the same name. Gah! Well, who needs shoes anyway when you can go to the "F Gameroom" and play "F Minigolf".comment:www.metafilter.com,2001:site.8553-98842Sat, 23 Jun 2001 20:27:17 -0800Laugh_trackBy: kindall

The article perpetuates the continually tooth-grating practice of referring to skateboarders as "skaters." Skating requires, well, <I>skates,</I> which are attached to one's feet. I'm sure I'm just being anal-retentive, but I'd think skating and skateboarding are different enough activities that it would be useful to employ different words for them.comment:www.metafilter.com,2001:site.8553-98847Sat, 23 Jun 2001 20:56:58 -0800kindallBy: mathowie

kindall, everyone that rides a skateboard "skates" and is a "skater." It's been an accepted standard of terminology at least since the 80's.
Fascinating paper, though I wish the author explored the entire range of subculture he described, instead of concentrating only on the relationship of skater to architecture and surroundings.comment:www.metafilter.com,2001:site.8553-98850Sat, 23 Jun 2001 21:04:07 -0800mathowieBy: kindall

Yes, and it's been annoying me most of that time. ;)comment:www.metafilter.com,2001:site.8553-98853Sat, 23 Jun 2001 21:13:34 -0800kindallBy: Laugh_track

They are. Rollerblades are seen in skate parks a lot more than rollerskates (of the 4-wheel variety), so those on rollerblades are called bladers, those on skateboards are skaters, and those in <a href="http://www.soapshoes.com/">soaps</a> are laughed at :)comment:www.metafilter.com,2001:site.8553-98895Sun, 24 Jun 2001 06:32:24 -0800Laugh_trackBy: fakeplastic

Another interesting article about the science of skateboarding tricks can be found <a href="http://www.exploratorium.edu/skateboarding/index.html">here</a>. For those who always wondered "how do they get the board to stick to their feet??"comment:www.metafilter.com,2001:site.8553-98929Sun, 24 Jun 2001 10:25:44 -0800fakeplasticBy: clavdivs

I remember messing around on my uncle's old skateboard... flat, slick piece of wood with narrow, dented, rusted metal wheels... frightening.comment:www.metafilter.com,2001:site.8553-98949Sun, 24 Jun 2001 12:45:48 -0800techgnollogicBy: jcterminal

Skateboarders are currently the <i>coolest people living on the earth.</I> If we me'fi'ers weren't all overage tubbos we'd be out there burning skin too. Instead we cat on about overintellectualized wannabee essays. I'm just pissed that boards didn't come along when I was still wild enough to get on one.comment:www.metafilter.com,2001:site.8553-98981Sun, 24 Jun 2001 15:04:10 -0800TwangBy: lbergstr

Hmmm, I actually thought it was clever (frontside/backside). Didn't take me more than a millisecond to figure it out. Could have been <b>more</b> clear too, and so could everything, but then how boring would <a href="http://www.useit.com">that be</a>comment:www.metafilter.com,2001:site.8553-99212Mon, 25 Jun 2001 09:59:13 -0800fooljayBy: rodii

But, Jay, <i>in that millisecond</i>, over 88% of web users choose to visit yahoo.com instead, and another .003% suffer a fatal infarction. And that means untold dollars in sales, and several lives, are lost. And <i>that</i>, Mr. and Mrs. Would-Be CEO, is why the web needs Jakob.comment:www.metafilter.com,2001:site.8553-99313Mon, 25 Jun 2001 12:44:18 -0800rodiiBy: fooljay

¡°Why?¡± asked Larry, in his practical way. "Sergeant," admonished the Lieutenant, "you mustn't use such language to your men." "Yes," accorded Shorty; "we'll git some rations from camp by this evenin'. Cap will look out for that. Meanwhile, I'll take out two or three o' the boys on a scout into the country, to see if we can't pick up something to eat." Marvor, however, didn't seem satisfied. "The masters always speak truth," he said. "Is this what you tell me?" MRS. B.: Why are they let, then? My song is short. I am near the dead. So Albert's letter remained unanswered¡ªCaro felt that Reuben was unjust. She had grown very critical of him lately, and a smarting dislike coloured her [Pg 337]judgments. After all, it was he who had driven everybody to whatever it was that had disgraced him. He was to blame for Robert's theft, for Albert's treachery, for Richard's base dependence on the Bardons, for George's death, for Benjamin's disappearance, for Tilly's marriage, for Rose's elopement¡ªit was a heavy load, but Caro put the whole of it on Reuben's shoulders, and added, moreover, the tragedy of her own warped life. He was a tyrant, who sucked his children's blood, and cursed them when they succeeded in breaking free. "Tell my lord," said Calverley, "I will attend him instantly." HoME²Ô¾®¿Õ·¬ºÅѸÀ×Á´½Ó
