The optimistic and pragmatic leftist politics of Wu, Mamdani and Katie Wilson (Seattle) is such a breath of fresh air. They just want to make life better in simple, tangible ways for ordinary people. It's an incredibly powerful message, and the fact that it is proving to be overwhelmingly popular is a rare example of something we can be hopeful about in this benighted age. The fact that business leaders and mainstream Dems are so freaked out about it is frankly really kind of telling on themselves if you ask me.
Now if we can just get some white guys who understand how to do this trick, too.comment:www.metafilter.com,2025:site.210533-8771373Thu, 02 Oct 2025 04:05:16 -0800Smedly, Butlerian jihadiBy: RonButNotStupid

At least Kraft had the decency to formally withdraw his name from the ballot (Wu is now officially unopposed) instead of leaving it there as an open invitation to ratfuck the election between now and November.
That's about the only good thing I can say about the guy. He's kind of vapid. He was so obviously selected by a cabal of business leaders to be the white knight that would save Boston from the scourge of an effective mayor who actually cares. And Wu beat him by almost fifty points.comment:www.metafilter.com,2025:site.210533-8771398Thu, 02 Oct 2025 05:47:57 -0800RonButNotStupidBy: Horace Rumpole

People are gasping for real opposition and a real alternative like it's oxygen. The idea that Democrats can win by being bland enough to appeal to everyone has been so thoroughly discredited that it's impossible to believe its advocates believe it.comment:www.metafilter.com,2025:site.210533-8771408Thu, 02 Oct 2025 06:40:29 -0800Horace RumpoleBy: RonButNotStupid

The idea that Democrats can win by being bland enough to appeal to everyone has been so thoroughly discredited that it's impossible to believe its advocates believe it.
It's kind of encouraging that Kraft was a candidate at all. The bench for bland, business-friendly Democrats is so shallow the only guy they could find was a man who is so obviously compromised by his billionaire Trump-licking father. What were they even thinking?comment:www.metafilter.com,2025:site.210533-8771415Thu, 02 Oct 2025 07:01:20 -0800RonButNotStupidBy: Jon_Evil

They were hoping peoples' loyalty to the football team his father owns, would allow him get more votes, but the actual voting population of Boston isn't the same as the outer-ring suburbs, which is the closest the ghouls funding his campaigns have been to Boston in years.comment:www.metafilter.com,2025:site.210533-8771420Thu, 02 Oct 2025 07:07:27 -0800Jon_EvilBy: Dr. Wu

Curious question for Bostonians - what has Wu's campaign visibility been like?
Because I'd wager that inspiring people to register and vote in the first place also had a pretty big role to play in Mamdani's success thus far down here (well, that and the fact that he was up against Eric Adams and Cuomo....)comment:www.metafilter.com,2025:site.210533-8771496Thu, 02 Oct 2025 08:29:06 -0800EmpressCallipygos
¡°Why?¡± asked Larry, in his practical way. "Sergeant," admonished the Lieutenant, "you mustn't use such language to your men." "Yes," accorded Shorty; "we'll git some rations from camp by this evenin'. Cap will look out for that. Meanwhile, I'll take out two or three o' the boys on a scout into the country, to see if we can't pick up something to eat." Marvor, however, didn't seem satisfied. "The masters always speak truth," he said. "Is this what you tell me?" MRS. B.: Why are they let, then? My song is short. I am near the dead. So Albert's letter remained unanswered¡ªCaro felt that Reuben was unjust. She had grown very critical of him lately, and a smarting dislike coloured her [Pg 337]judgments. After all, it was he who had driven everybody to whatever it was that had disgraced him. He was to blame for Robert's theft, for Albert's treachery, for Richard's base dependence on the Bardons, for George's death, for Benjamin's disappearance, for Tilly's marriage, for Rose's elopement¡ªit was a heavy load, but Caro put the whole of it on Reuben's shoulders, and added, moreover, the tragedy of her own warped life. He was a tyrant, who sucked his children's blood, and cursed them when they succeeded in breaking free. "Tell my lord," said Calverley, "I will attend him instantly." HoME²Ô¾®¿Õ·¬ºÅѸÀ×Á´½Ó
