Perhaps the lizard pizza results go some way to explaining the vitality of the colony of painted agamas that has grown up around my community's swimming pool. A lot of pizza gets eaten there...comment:www.metafilter.com,2025:site.210386-8767609Fri, 19 Sep 2025 07:06:20 -0800Aardvark CheeselogBy: Spike Glee

Fantastic. Although surprising they awarded a study from 1991! You'd think there'd be more current research on garlicky breast milk.comment:www.metafilter.com,2025:site.210386-8767626Fri, 19 Sep 2025 07:57:46 -0800samthemanderBy: demi-octopus

With the bats-avoiding-alcohol story winning this year, this seems like an early favourite for next year:

Reminds me of when we lived on a farm when I was young. The milk cow got into the wild garlic, which made her milk garlicky. Rather than let it go to waste, we just drank it. But also discovered it made amazing butter and was a great ingredient for cornbread.comment:www.metafilter.com,2025:site.210386-8767684Fri, 19 Sep 2025 10:41:36 -0800Mo NickelsBy: DirtyOldTown

Me thinks the authors of the narcissism study perhaps wanted to be told they were smarter than they actually are rather than that their research was Ig Nobel.comment:www.metafilter.com,2025:site.210386-8767720Fri, 19 Sep 2025 12:42:19 -0800tafetta, darling!By: Melismata

clawsoon, the lethal dose for alcohol gets interesting. A one liter bottle of vodka reaches the LD50 if you use worldwide average 62 kg body weight, of course the more vulnerable 50% does not go around drinking whole big bottles.
(5 g alcohol / kg body weight) / (0.84 kg alcohol / l) = 1.2 * 0.005 l/kg = 0.006 l/kgcomment:www.metafilter.com,2025:site.210386-8768566Mon, 22 Sep 2025 14:18:26 -0800jeffburdges
¡°Why?¡± asked Larry, in his practical way. "Sergeant," admonished the Lieutenant, "you mustn't use such language to your men." "Yes," accorded Shorty; "we'll git some rations from camp by this evenin'. Cap will look out for that. Meanwhile, I'll take out two or three o' the boys on a scout into the country, to see if we can't pick up something to eat." Marvor, however, didn't seem satisfied. "The masters always speak truth," he said. "Is this what you tell me?" MRS. B.: Why are they let, then? My song is short. I am near the dead. So Albert's letter remained unanswered¡ªCaro felt that Reuben was unjust. She had grown very critical of him lately, and a smarting dislike coloured her [Pg 337]judgments. After all, it was he who had driven everybody to whatever it was that had disgraced him. He was to blame for Robert's theft, for Albert's treachery, for Richard's base dependence on the Bardons, for George's death, for Benjamin's disappearance, for Tilly's marriage, for Rose's elopement¡ªit was a heavy load, but Caro put the whole of it on Reuben's shoulders, and added, moreover, the tragedy of her own warped life. He was a tyrant, who sucked his children's blood, and cursed them when they succeeded in breaking free. "Tell my lord," said Calverley, "I will attend him instantly." HoME²Ô¾®¿Õ·¬ºÅѸÀ×Á´½Ó
