Town of 80 buys old primary school for $1.10 and turns it into op shop [thrift shop/charity shop]. When Geranium Primary School was forced to close its doors due to dwindling enrolment numbers, it shut a century-old chapter for the tiny town. But then one former teacher with big dreams stepped in to her help her town blossom again.post:www.metafilter.com,2025:site.209115Mon, 09 Jun 2025 06:32:52 -0800chariot pulled by cassowariesOpShopsCommunityInfrastructureNotForProfitEnterprisesBy: mittens

This is a wonderful idea. A nearby school recently closed down--a beautiful old building, huge and stately--and every time we go by it, I wish that someone could buy it and turn it into, well, anything other than an empty building.comment:www.metafilter.com,2025:site.209115-8731809Mon, 09 Jun 2025 07:14:00 -0800mittensBy: AzraelBrown

At least in the upper midwest US, turning old rural school into an antique shop is pretty commonplace. They're generally leaky, falling apart, and eventually become too poorly maintained to even be an antique shop anymore, but I've been in a lot of them. They're probably the largest non-industrial building in the town, have ample access and parking, and lots of nooks and crannies to put all the things out of the town's basements and attics into, in hopes of attracting big-city deal-seekers hoping to find things that haven't been super picked over already.comment:www.metafilter.com,2025:site.209115-8731813Mon, 09 Jun 2025 07:19:29 -0800AzraelBrownBy: Spike Glee

My old High School was turned into a Muslim Community Center. They've owned it for at least 20 years, but it's on the market again.comment:www.metafilter.com,2025:site.209115-8731833Mon, 09 Jun 2025 07:50:43 -0800Spike GleeBy: doctornemo

Our local town tore our one room school house down and put in a bike path.comment:www.metafilter.com,2025:site.209115-8731877Mon, 09 Jun 2025 09:01:03 -0800922257033c4a0f3cecdbd819a46d626999d1af4aBy: jacquilynne

There's a former highschool here in Ottawa that was transformed into a community hub, with the classrooms mostly turned into office space for community arts organizations and the gym and auditorium turned into a music and arts venue that now books some of the best mid-level touring acts that come through town. It is great to see these buildings repurposed where they can be and the Bronson Center is doing great things. The art classrooms have been repurposed as a day program in the arts for those with various disabilities.
On the other hand, the elementary school in my home town was closed due to dropping enrollment and only about 2 years later, there was a bad winter and they didn't get around soon enough to clear the snow off the flat roof and the whole thing collapsed. It was a pretty structurally sound building up to that point, but a couple of weeks of heavy snowfall that turned to rain is just too heavy for most buildings to hold up under. Had it been in use, they wouldn't have let it build up like that.comment:www.metafilter.com,2025:site.209115-8731936Mon, 09 Jun 2025 10:59:14 -0800jacquilynne
¡°Why?¡± asked Larry, in his practical way. "Sergeant," admonished the Lieutenant, "you mustn't use such language to your men." "Yes," accorded Shorty; "we'll git some rations from camp by this evenin'. Cap will look out for that. Meanwhile, I'll take out two or three o' the boys on a scout into the country, to see if we can't pick up something to eat." Marvor, however, didn't seem satisfied. "The masters always speak truth," he said. "Is this what you tell me?" MRS. B.: Why are they let, then? My song is short. I am near the dead. So Albert's letter remained unanswered¡ªCaro felt that Reuben was unjust. She had grown very critical of him lately, and a smarting dislike coloured her [Pg 337]judgments. After all, it was he who had driven everybody to whatever it was that had disgraced him. He was to blame for Robert's theft, for Albert's treachery, for Richard's base dependence on the Bardons, for George's death, for Benjamin's disappearance, for Tilly's marriage, for Rose's elopement¡ªit was a heavy load, but Caro put the whole of it on Reuben's shoulders, and added, moreover, the tragedy of her own warped life. He was a tyrant, who sucked his children's blood, and cursed them when they succeeded in breaking free. "Tell my lord," said Calverley, "I will attend him instantly." HoME²Ô¾®¿Õ·¬ºÅѸÀ×Á´½Ó
