If you find yourself with more time to ponder your utensils, <a href="http://www.eatingutensils.net/">Eating Utensils.net</a> may be the site for you. Not too detailed, but just enough to whet your informational appetite. There's <a href="http://www.eatingutensils.net/history-of-cutlery/">the history of cutlery</a> (<a href="http://www.eatingutensils.net/history-of-cutlery/fork-history/">fork</a>, <a href="http://www.eatingutensils.net/history-of-cutlery/spoon-history/">spoon</a>, and <a href="http://www.eatingutensils.net/history-of-cutlery/knife-history/">knife</a>), plus <a href="http://www.eatingutensils.net/history-of-other-eating-utensils/">other eating utensils</a> (<a href="http://www.eatingutensils.net/history-of-other-eating-utensils/chopsticks-history/">chopsticks</a>, <a href="http://www.eatingutensils.net/history-of-other-eating-utensils/skewer-history/">skewers</a>, <a href="http://www.eatingutensils.net/history-of-other-eating-utensils/toothpicks-history/">toothpicks</a>, and <a href="http://www.eatingutensils.net/history-of-other-eating-utensils/drinking-straws-history/">drinking straws</a>). To round out the collection, there's also <a href="http://www.eatingutensils.net/history-of-cutlery/timeline-of-eating-utensils/">a timeline of eating utensils</a> and <a href="http://www.eatingutensils.net/facts-about-eating-utensils/">more facts</a>. <br /><br />But if you're interested in deep dives, there's always Wikpedia, vaguely listed in the age of the first recorded or known use or example:

I'm still using this pair of cooking-size chopsticks that came with the wok I bought in the early 1980s. They're a little shorter now, but should be good for another 20 years!comment:www.metafilter.com,2020:site.186448-7907672Tue, 07 Apr 2020 11:15:51 -0800sneeblerBy: scamper

Now this post is just making me sad as shopping for esoteric cooking and eating implements was supposed to be a highlight of my japan trip that didnt happen because of this fucking virus.comment:www.metafilter.com,2020:site.186448-7907748Tue, 07 Apr 2020 13:47:46 -0800Exceptional_HubrisBy: Splunge

I was curious when "spoon" became separate from "cup with a handle", but the archaeology of cups seems surprisingly light. Surely they must have been made before Mesopotamia, but that is the oldest reference I found in a quick google.comment:www.metafilter.com,2020:site.186448-7907762Tue, 07 Apr 2020 14:02:20 -0800tavella
¡°Why?¡± asked Larry, in his practical way. "Sergeant," admonished the Lieutenant, "you mustn't use such language to your men." "Yes," accorded Shorty; "we'll git some rations from camp by this evenin'. Cap will look out for that. Meanwhile, I'll take out two or three o' the boys on a scout into the country, to see if we can't pick up something to eat." Marvor, however, didn't seem satisfied. "The masters always speak truth," he said. "Is this what you tell me?" MRS. B.: Why are they let, then? My song is short. I am near the dead. So Albert's letter remained unanswered¡ªCaro felt that Reuben was unjust. She had grown very critical of him lately, and a smarting dislike coloured her [Pg 337]judgments. After all, it was he who had driven everybody to whatever it was that had disgraced him. He was to blame for Robert's theft, for Albert's treachery, for Richard's base dependence on the Bardons, for George's death, for Benjamin's disappearance, for Tilly's marriage, for Rose's elopement¡ªit was a heavy load, but Caro put the whole of it on Reuben's shoulders, and added, moreover, the tragedy of her own warped life. He was a tyrant, who sucked his children's blood, and cursed them when they succeeded in breaking free. "Tell my lord," said Calverley, "I will attend him instantly." HoME²Ô¾®¿Õ·¬ºÅѸÀ×Á´½Ó
