<a href="http://trowelblazers.com/">"TrowelBlazers</a> is a celebration of women archaeologists, palaeontologists and geologists who have been doing awesome work for far longer, and in far greater numbers, than most people realize." When I was but a wee lad, enrolled in my school district's gifted program, there was one teacher assigned to each major subject area therein. The Science teacher was Mrs. McCarthy. She gave us a brief grounding in many areas of science -- biology, chemistry, geology, botany -- but archaeology was her passion.
She brought back stories and artifacts from an excavation she took part in in Swaziland, she took us to a number of dig sites close to home and guided us through our own excavations, she was tireless in encouraging our own inquisitiveness and curiosity, she wrote <a href="http://www.amazon.com/exec/obidos/ASIN/0914634968/metafilter-20/ref=nosim/">a book</a> about her experiences with my class and others, and she was my own inspiration for choosing never to stop learning.
She was my TrowelBlazer. Bless you, Gloria McCarthy, wherever you are.comment:www.metafilter.com,2014:site.140638-5624581Mon, 07 Jul 2014 13:10:01 -0800delfinBy: barchan

Just set my computer on fire sending out this link to every single woman geologist and paleontologist I've ever met. Already getting replies, which could be half divided into "This is the coolest thing ever!" and "I'll be in there someday!" Wheee! Thank-you, thank-you, brundlefly.
Awareness like this is so important. I can't overstate enough the influence of Mary Anning - on TrowelBlazers <a href="http://trowelblazers.com/happy-birthday-mary-anning-2/">here</a> - on me as a geologist. One of the greatest thrills of my life was seeing her <a href="http://silentreed.hubpages.com/hub/greatest-fossil-hunter#slide5322377">Fossil Extractor</a> -aka her rock hammer - at the<a href="http://www.lymeregismuseum.co.uk/"> Lyme Regis Museum</a>, near her stomping grounds. I admit I cried. (I also named my own rock hammer Mary Anning, so she's always with me in spirit.) It's not just her dedication to her science and her trail-blazing on our profession that's inspiration- it's what she had to put up with as a woman and still keep on keepin' on. I have <a href="http://imgur.com/ayXBNo4">her picture above my microscope</a> and look to it for encouragement whenever I experience some of the downsides of my profession. With a site like this, now I'm thinking I'll start an entire wall of inspiration.

¡°Why?¡± asked Larry, in his practical way. "Sergeant," admonished the Lieutenant, "you mustn't use such language to your men." "Yes," accorded Shorty; "we'll git some rations from camp by this evenin'. Cap will look out for that. Meanwhile, I'll take out two or three o' the boys on a scout into the country, to see if we can't pick up something to eat." Marvor, however, didn't seem satisfied. "The masters always speak truth," he said. "Is this what you tell me?" MRS. B.: Why are they let, then? My song is short. I am near the dead. So Albert's letter remained unanswered¡ªCaro felt that Reuben was unjust. She had grown very critical of him lately, and a smarting dislike coloured her [Pg 337]judgments. After all, it was he who had driven everybody to whatever it was that had disgraced him. He was to blame for Robert's theft, for Albert's treachery, for Richard's base dependence on the Bardons, for George's death, for Benjamin's disappearance, for Tilly's marriage, for Rose's elopement¡ªit was a heavy load, but Caro put the whole of it on Reuben's shoulders, and added, moreover, the tragedy of her own warped life. He was a tyrant, who sucked his children's blood, and cursed them when they succeeded in breaking free. "Tell my lord," said Calverley, "I will attend him instantly." HoME²Ô¾®¿Õ·¬ºÅѸÀ×Á´½Ó
