E is for Edward who came to my attention when I was 12 and read a series of books by John Belairs, about a little boy with a wizard for a grandfather, a witch for a neighbor and a tomboy for a friend and all manner of black magic wielding enemies and houses with clocks in the walls. And while I liked these books immensely, it was always the eerie, evocative sketches done with millions of pen scratches that made me thumb through the books over and over again.

I read John Bellairs religiously as a kid, too, and it was the obsessivly cross-hatched and empty-eyed populace of the covers that drew me to them. Edward Gorey (Ogdred Weary, O. Mude :) was something unique to illustration that can never be replaced.
