<em><a href="http://www.incubatepictures.com/">"There's No Tomorrow"</a> is a half-hour animated documentary that deals with resource depletion, energy, and growth.</em> <br /><br /><em>The original idea for the film was to be a pastiche of the pro-capitalist propaganda cartoons of the 1940s and 50s. These works are all in the public domain, making them an invaluable resource: <a href="http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=hcg-6bBcGlc">"Going Places"</a> (1948), <a href="http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=vbw8DFwoqJ0">"Meet King Joe"</a> (1949), <a href="http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=w7BjO65--JE">"Why Play Leapfrog"</a> (1949), <a href="http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=sjyWxERgGJs">"What Makes Us Tick"</a> (1952), <a href="http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=nHDyE954l4U">"It's Everybodys Business"</a> (1954) and <a href="http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Fd8Dnz72C1Q">"Destination Earth"</a> (1956).</em>post:www.metafilter.com,2012:site.113108Wed, 22 Feb 2012 19:47:40 -0800TrurlenergyresourcesenvironmentalismeconomicspeakoilanimationdocumentarycapitalismgrowthBy: panaceanot

Kind of plodding pace, more than I expected. But I can see how this could be red meat to the doomer crowd. I would have thought the tips on how to survive the apocalypse might have more impact, were it not for the flat delivery. Or the futility of even trying.comment:www.metafilter.com,2012:site.113108-4203026Wed, 22 Feb 2012 20:38:08 -08002N2222By: Mblue

I don't even <i>want</i> to survive the apocalypse. I know what happens afterwards and I want none of that.comment:www.metafilter.com,2012:site.113108-4203054Wed, 22 Feb 2012 20:53:53 -0800fuqBy: panaceanot

I relatively regularly horrify people with my stock answer to admonitions to live healthier, "Who wants to be a 70 year-old man in a world with 10 billion people?"
It occurs to me that <a href="http://www.imdb.com/title/tt0070723/"><i>Soylent Green</i></a> is set just 10 years from now. It's looking more and more to have been frighteningly prophetic. Still, as I mused to my friend last night that nothing would delight me more than to live to regret smoking, drinking, and cheeseburgers because humanity somehow found a way to a beautiful future.comment:www.metafilter.com,2012:site.113108-4203097Wed, 22 Feb 2012 21:41:37 -0800ob1quixoteBy: Yowser

Sorry, well treaded territory. We're toast, <a href="http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=F-QA2rkpBSY">Simple and obvious math proves we're screwed</a> , as usual Doug Stanhope <a href="http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Wwcap_-9tuA">Speaks the truth(NSFAnywhere)</a>.
Only takeaway I got is, Canada won't peak in production until after 2018? I'M MOVING TO ALBERTA, BABY! Show me the money. Sadly, that's the only new thing I learned here.comment:www.metafilter.com,2012:site.113108-4203241Thu, 23 Feb 2012 02:42:38 -0800YowserBy: foleypt

This impressive movie is the work of a single guy that has been working on and off on the project for the last 6-7 years. His now infrequently updated blog is <a href="http://www.idleworm.com/blog/">here</a>
This shit is important and I had hoped that propagation of the understanding of this problem would be enough to give impetuous to make the economic changes necessary to sort out it and global warming. However these days I'm less hopeful, the world seems more than ever just lurching from crisis to crisis, there is nobody in the wheelhouse, with us fast approaching some difficult waters.comment:www.metafilter.com,2012:site.113108-4203313Thu, 23 Feb 2012 05:05:30 -0800foleyptBy: Trurl

<em>well treaded territory</em>
The doom, yes. The doom as conveyed by - as foleypt observes - an impressively and single-handedly animated short, I don't think so.
If the global famine angle is dull, check out his "making of" page. I thought it was cool.comment:www.metafilter.com,2012:site.113108-4203337Thu, 23 Feb 2012 05:41:00 -0800TrurlBy: staggering termagant

Make Wealth History writes a pithy critique (and there are some interesting comments) of the film <a href="http://makewealthhistory.org/2012/02/20/theres-no-tomorrow/">here</a>.comment:www.metafilter.com,2012:site.113108-4204918Thu, 23 Feb 2012 23:55:02 -0800Megami
¡°Why?¡± asked Larry, in his practical way. "Sergeant," admonished the Lieutenant, "you mustn't use such language to your men." "Yes," accorded Shorty; "we'll git some rations from camp by this evenin'. Cap will look out for that. Meanwhile, I'll take out two or three o' the boys on a scout into the country, to see if we can't pick up something to eat." Marvor, however, didn't seem satisfied. "The masters always speak truth," he said. "Is this what you tell me?" MRS. B.: Why are they let, then? My song is short. I am near the dead. So Albert's letter remained unanswered¡ªCaro felt that Reuben was unjust. She had grown very critical of him lately, and a smarting dislike coloured her [Pg 337]judgments. After all, it was he who had driven everybody to whatever it was that had disgraced him. He was to blame for Robert's theft, for Albert's treachery, for Richard's base dependence on the Bardons, for George's death, for Benjamin's disappearance, for Tilly's marriage, for Rose's elopement¡ªit was a heavy load, but Caro put the whole of it on Reuben's shoulders, and added, moreover, the tragedy of her own warped life. He was a tyrant, who sucked his children's blood, and cursed them when they succeeded in breaking free. "Tell my lord," said Calverley, "I will attend him instantly." HoME²Ô¾®¿Õ·¬ºÅѸÀ×Á´½Ó
